How to change a fuse

a few faults in that video.

winding the fuse wire the wrong way round the screws (it would loosen as you tighten the screw).

that fuse box looks beyond any economical help. Should be a warning on the video - if your fusebox looks like this, dont bother changing the fuse, get an electrician.

does the main switch really switch off when a fuse blows in a Wylex standard? Cant say ours ever did.

no flash eminated from the mainswitch when it was thrown  I always get that!!

"snip off any excess wire" >> video of wire cutters cutting about 2 inches from the fuse holder.

Whats with the bell hanging off the wall?

And its hardly a great selection of fuses is it? all they have is one 32A fuse! No others to compare them to!

crafty1289 I will take your guidance on this.

Are you saying there are too many errors in the video clip? (although even I knew about the main switch)

If this is the case I will remove the link.

thanks

It gives fairly accurate advice. Its not dangerous by any means, but if my fuse box looked like that, i'd have it ripped out asap. Note scorch marks and burning.

I wouldn't remove the video, just a word of warning here to DIYers.

If you have a Wylex standard fusebox like the one shown in the video above, please ask a local electrician to inspect your installation. It is possible the installation is very old, especially if you have a brown version of the fusebox shown - this indicates very worn and degraded cables which could be dangerous and NEED replacing ASAP. Any burning or scorch marks, as shown on the fusebox above, are signs that something is wrong. Please turn off the main switch and call an electrician.

I have both burning & scorch marks, but they're in my undercrackers, not on my CU. Any advice, crafty?

Its probably caused by screwing your wires in backwards

Sorry, guys, i genuinely found it helpful. I didn't realise that it would cause so many problems. Did anyone inform them that their info is a bit dodgy? If not I may well send an email. I guess I was just lucky.

send them a link to this page, to let them know there's a few flaws in their video. It just looks like someone got bored and thought "lets make a video about how to change a fuse" spur of the moment style! Its the worst fusebox they could have chosen, with the worst selection of protective devices! Showing that particular fusebox, they should be recommending they turn the mainswitch OFF and LEAVE IT OFF!

I actually went on this and thought it looked ok, but if you think it's sussed then get in touch with them. I checked out some of the other vids on there too - they seemed kosher to me.
