Hi guys,

We've had a recent disaster whereby a storm has recently flung a heavy door (waiting to go to dump) into our new exterior doors. There is now a fissure / crack which essentially goes all the way through to the other side and we've only just managed to keep the door shut without it all falling apart. These new doors arrived, custom made, in France, after a year of ordering, so I'm not keen on just getting new ones made straightaway.

Does anyone have any advice on how I could fix this issue, even for a temporary fix?

Thanks very much. Really p****ed off.

Fred

If it were me and I would hazard you're planning on replacing (can't see a repair being successful), say a bit of full height 12 or 18mm plywood either side and then bolted through with some bolts. Then maybe some screws in the side (assuming it's solid wood). Not aesthetic in any way but robust. If it wasn't on the hinge side it mightn't be so bad.

I think there is 2 expedient methods.

How is the glazing and the 'raised and fielded' panel retained? By beadings or slots in the door frame.

Method 1 - the easiest; Obtain (if do have, beg borrow 2 or 3 sash clamps that are the full width of the door. Take the door down. Once you have done that 'run' waterproof glue into the crack and then clamp the door width up. insert wood screws (about 20mm less in length than the door stile width) into the hinge side of the door. Do not put screws into the mortises as those will not have much holding power. Leave cramped up until the glue is dry.

Method 2.
Is similar instead of wood screws you use 5 or 6mm bolts which requires removal of the glazing and wood panels - only if those are held in place by beading.
So if you can remove the beadings and then take the glazing and panels out, clamp across the door width to glue and close up the fracture, then, carefully, very carefully, drill through the door frame stile from where the panels were removed to the Hinge side to take 4 or 5 6mm bolts into captive nuts on the hinge side. You will have to drill a larger, clearance for the bolt head and washer in the glazing and panel rebate so the glazing and panel do not touch the bolt head. Once dry reassemble the door and rehang.

Good luck
