Experience leads me to agree with JohnW2 By all means use the fuse blowing diode as a second line of defence but do not rely on it.
 
This is all a mute point really seeing as the radio is kaput.

Quite. I should have added that. I think I must be old-fashioned, since the sort of radios I deal with virtually come free in packets of corn flakes these days :)
