How to send a private message to someone?

I tried clicking on profile but cannot find a button from conversations. The only way I seem able to send a msg is if I send it to their profile, but I guess this is visible to anyone who sees his profile right?

Click on their name or profile picture and then click on the 'Start a Conversation' tab.

Some of the profiles I want to start a conversation with, do not have "start a conversation" available?

You can change the ability to have conversations in your privacy settings. Maybe they've done that.
