how to wire a dimmer lightswitch

Yeah I have done that it red into L1 and black into ground lights on but won't switch off or dimmer 😡
Now looking at the instructions you posted, as BAS pointed out you have the wrong dimmer for the circuit you are using.
Send it back for a refund - you need something like this:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/varilight-push-dimmer-1g-1-2w-250w/34373

provided your total load in watts is within these confines normally 40-240w.

How many lights are you attempting to control and what type of light are you using?

That device is NOT intended to be connected to the mains. If you have then you will have destroyed it.

It requires a 12 volt DC supply and drives LED lamps.

It cannot be used to replace a normal light switch.

Are these the instructions you told me didn't really say anything?

When bought it I asked if I could use it for bedroom main light and they said yes so if its not compatible I will ask for refund, what am a needing to buy to make it work please?

FGS!

  1. The instructions have a diagram, showing a 12-24V DC supply
  2. The instructions have in writing "The input voltage of this controller should to be DC12V-24V"
  3. The item title on eBay says "IR Remote LED Light Dimmer 12 Key Adjustable Brightness Control Screw DC 12V 8A
  4. In the item details it says

    Supply voltage: DC 12V~24V

    and

Supply voltage of this product is DC12V ~ DC24V, it is forbidden for others voltage.
  5. You bought it and connected it to your mains wiring.

what am a needing to buy to make it work please?
An electrician.

Seriously - you obviously have no idea about any of this.

You are, genuinely, lucky that the thing did not blow up and injure you, or catch fire.

Don't push your luck - stop fiddling with your electrics now, not after your luck runs out.

The fact that it will turn on but not off or dim suggests that it is damaged by the overvoltage you have given it.

This means you will be unable to return it for a refund - see number 4 on the instruction sheet.

Yes I don't no what am doing that's by asked seller if it was compatible he said yes so bought it am not an electrician so dont no nothing about it that's why asked if it right item no nee to be funny a wouldnt ask for advice if I understood instructions it was told it right item for bedroom main light!!!

I have told you what to buy above.
Stop messing about asking the same question and get on with it or get an electrician in to help you.
We cannot help anymore.

The seller misinformed you.

I'm not being funny, either peculiar or ha-ha.

You have asked advice here. More than one person has said the switch you have is WRONG.

One person has told you the RIGHT switch to buy. If you are still unsure, PLEASE GET AN ELECTRICIAN TO DO THIS WORK.

Apart from anything else there are four wires on the diagram and you only have two.

Even if it were a 'mains' switch how the . would you expect it to work.

Yes I don't no what am doing
Then please stop trying to do it.

You don't have any idea about voltages.

You cannot understand very simple diagrams.

You cannot understand simple instructions.

Trying to do electrical work with such massive ignorance could get you killed - please stop now, and don't start again until you know what you are doing.
