Hi

Subject says it all really. I am trying to add a wireless stat to my boiler. I was wondering if it acceptable to just use a 5 core flex?. The reciever needs power (taken from boiler) and 2 further wires to boiler for the thermosat. The manual says 2 black wires. Can i just sleeve the wires black?.

Or is 3 core wire used then 2 extra singles?

Does colours of wires have to match? They are indeed both black on boiler for the thermostat conection.

don't know how this is normally done.

Thanks for any help on this matter.

No, there is no requirement for the colours to match the wiring inside the boiler. They should, however, be correctly coloured in relation to live/neutral/earth.

If using 5-core flex, you should connect the green/yellow CPC to earth at the boiler (even if it's unused at the stat itself), and then the rest is up to you. There is no strict colour code, but it would make sense to use blue as neutral, brown as permanent live, and sleeve one of the remaining conductors in brown to indicate switched live.

Hi again

Thanks, makes sense now.

The 5 core flex will be, brown, blue, black, grey, green/yellow.

So i will use brown, blue, green/yellow for the reciever to power it and the black, grey for the thermostat conections which are volt free.

That seems reasonable. Although the terminals on the stat may be volt free, I would still suggest brown sleeving over the black and grey cores if the boiler's call for heat is 230v.
