Hi all,

Over the past 2 years the tyrolean rener has been flaking off the chimney.

Im having to be very budget-focused (due to other building works Im having done).

Other than it being an eye-sore, how urgent is it to rectify? Is it best to get it done this year, or perghaps can wait for a couple of years?

How much do you think I should budget for?

Does it even need a tyrolean finish? Perhaps cheaper option is to just remove all the blown render and paint it white.

While Im at it, is it worth removing the defunct clay chimney pot? If so, what should it be replaced with - a metal cowl?

Thanks

It looks more like a textured paint that's not adhering properly. Failing render means big cracks and exposed brickwork, yours looks ok.

Hmm, you may be right! If so thats potentially saved me a lot of money thanks!

Can I ask: what would make the paint adhere to the chimeny better? Do people use PVA glue or something (I heard this was a thing). Or what would the best brand/type of textured paint be? I just dont want to have the chimney painted, and for this to happen again in a few years.

I can't tell which it is, paint or render too thick for one too thin for the other but if it is render I would think it is coming off because of a poor scratch coat. Which ever it is it will just get worse if water gets behind it and freezes

Do not prime with PVA. It re-emulsifies when wet.

It might be one of those spray on textured finishes.

I would be inclined to use a high build textured paint. To minimise the steps in the paint, you could use Toupret Touprelith F filler and stipple it with a stiff brush
