I recently, due to continual nagging, replaced the valve in my overflow tank in the loft. It had been overfilling and dripping almost 24/7....

In order to change the valve I switched off the water supply & drained the system....I believe this may have been an error!

As I marvelled at my own triumph, my wife switched on the hot water tap....

Next thing I know the tank in the spare room began making horrendous noises....everyone I've asked says its 'air'......but how do I get it out?

If it's not air what could it be???

help!

Indeed it was!

If you have bath filler then it's usually easy:

1. Put your palm under the spout to stop all water emerging.
2. Open the hot tap fully.
3. Open the cold tap for about 10 seconds.
4. Close the cold tap.
5. Suddenly remove your palm from the spout (downwards to prevent cuts).

The purpose of this is to use the hot water to 'backfill' the cold supply, then to release it so that the water that just filled the pipe rushes out, drawing behind it the air that's causing you the problem.

If it doesn't work first time, do it again - it often takes 2 or times to get things flowing properly.

If you can't do it with a bath filler, then use washing machine connections (if you have both hold and cold supplies there) - just couple up one of the appliance hoses to cross connect the hot and cold valves, then:

1. Open cold valve.
2. Open hot valve for 10 seconds or so.
3. Close hot valve.
4. Close cold valve.
5. Open a hot tap somewhere to see if it's cured.

If it's not air what could it be?
A monster?
