I have just moved home to a 45 yr old bungalow as I am getting on in years I have found some wiring that I don't recognise at all and would like the audience to help me please. There are two wires one appears to be an earth lead 6mm and the other is a 4mm red wire they are gathered together with a 2.5 socket wiring and two lighting wires across the floor in the loft. Where these two wires go I do do not know and I don't know what they are used for, Can you help please.

Hard to tell just from that. Red was usually live in old colour scheme. Green/yellow could be main Earth bonding for gas or water pipes?

The best thing to do would be to dispatch someone to the loft. They trace each end of each cable and knock on the ceiling while you (or another) go round and follow the knocks. You may get a very good idea where the cables go to/ come from.

So the red wire and the earth go into the junction box along with an incoming and outgoing 2.5mm cable and smaller lighting wires.

You need to either get an electrician in or provide more detail. The earth wire is going nowhere from what you say.

Blup

These two wires go over the boarding and of course should be under it, but the boards have been nailed down and to disturb these boards now could well put stress on the beams and crack the plaster board below. What I am wanting to do is cut these wires and join them using the same grades, they would though have to be joined twice using some sort of junction box. Sorry but I do not know where these wires go and cannot trace them, getting tradesmen has proved very difficult for me, no one seems to want to do anything these days. Tried umpteen times on the well known tradespeople sites to no avail. Firstly I have trouble putting into words exactly what I want and secondly no one (once I have tendered the job ) seems to want to do it.
