looking for views on a boiler located

in non insulated garage on East facing wall, this would seem not to be ideal as internal thermostats keep cycling through the night at 6 degrees

Its pretty close to the quickest coldest bit of the building

Why would some one do this ?

Here we go again this is the guy who thinks he can hear next doors boiler and keeps him awake through two sets of walls and across a garden.

His wife can hear a boiler which is undetectable on the Councils noise meter !

We never heard what the outcome was?

Obviously, the location of a boiler should be where it can discharge over 2.5 m of your own land.

Never, never, ever, ever

put a boiler in a garage...... ever, never,

unless you want to annoy your neighbours.

Yep you got it, it stuck in your memory didnt it congrats- well its been some time and its still an issue which we have tried to live with rather than fall out. There are other threads asking about similar issues, its unfortunate the guy is not particularly easy to talk to about anything let alone something like this when he could quite easily change his timer

Straightforward question to answer , if you had the choice would you put one in a garage on an east wall ? you are the experts -

Imagine your microwave running 24/7 thats what its like to listen to !

Not having read your previous post am curious.
Are you asking a question for your neighbours or your boiler ?
For me as far away from living area as possible with easy reach controls.
That may just be a garage lol.

Go on then

give us the dimensions

how far from????

seriously if it annoys you that much.............

Move

Move yes i have considered that but why should i be driven from my house by someone next door. When you involve the council you have to declare disputes if you sell - the next people to purchase the house will have exactly the same problem and we could be sued if we dont declare so i have nothing to loose except a lot of money which i dont have and i would rather resolve amicably even if it takes a bit of time .

Since my initial posts the source of the noise is clear it is caused by a resonance from the boiler when it is running in its current position, this reasonance travels as a low frequency noise not heard by everyone immediately but comes with time (depends if you have damaged your hearing). This type of sound can travel through walls and up to a distance of 30 metres and the relative positions of the buildings makes this worse. Our house acts as a route for the noise (vibration) .

So there you have it, science is a wonderful thing - i think a jacket for the boiler like those used in static generators would help to absorb the noise - it would be cheaper than moving house now how do i get a guy with an attitude problem to take that on board ? as i would happily pay to have the boiler moved . Council guys have clearly come across this before and its just a tricky one to solve its not black and white like a leaky pipe.

When i do get it sorted i will be very pleased to put it to bed (sic) and maybe help some others who struggle with a lack of sleep !

Baxpotti, why do you think a boiler in a garage will annoy neighbours?

To me a boiler in a garage is a good way to place it out of the house.

Modern boilers are fairly quiet, often less that 60 dBA, and if it needed to come on occasionally during a cold night then so what?

If I am tired I sleep whatevers going on, perhaps McBean and wife dont get tired enough to need to sleep?

A lady I used to know used to go for a 30-40 minute walk before going to bed each night so she never had any problem sleeping.

As for a jacket for the boiler i think a straight jacket and padded cell would be better and i don`t mean for the boiler . I had a customer pestered by a neighbour about position of boiler and so called noise after the council, enviromental health and whoever else they could get to listen to it said there was no noise they still insisted they could hear the boiler. Even with all 3 services turned off to the house and tricked into thinking boiler was turned on they where still insisting they could hear it. Even at one stage blamed the red stand by light on the telle for the noise. You sound a very similar person . Try getting a test for tinnitus

As for best position for fitting a boiler this is down to where the customer who is PAYING for it wants it providing it meets the current regulations even if it is not the most ideal place

Its easy to judge from afar - we had our hearing checked ok early on in this saga - we have spoken to the neighbour and maintained a speaking relationship - the powercuts we had in the Autumn were evidence enough to show where the problem lies, now we have to get it fixed - at no time has there been any hassle from us or the council just some discussion with me to understand the problem hence my question about boiler location which could play a part - the boiler at night when outside temp about 6 degrees fires 3 -4 times an hour - waste of fuel to me !

Low frequency sound is difficult to measure but ask anybody who has tinnitus its a pain in the arse and as i say when you do start to hear it wherever it may come from you will know about it. try the micowave test thats what it sounds like.

Some of you are lucky where you live where if you have had no issues with neighbours. Good luck

why not buy some ear defenders to sleep in? £6.99 from screwfix and they are a lot cheaper than paying for a neighbours boiler to be moved.

Alterativly try sleeping with a Barry White love album playing in the background to drown out any undue neighbourly boiler noise.

There was a very clever engineer who I worked with at the BBC who was bothered by LF hum from the substation close to his home.

For many weeks he mentioned this whenever I sat with him at lunch until he eventually told me that his doctor had advised him that it was tinitus !!!

There was a lady who phoned the medical program on BBC R4 and she had a known medical condition where the brain was unable to process the sound from the ears correctly and almost imperceptible sounds were very annoying to her because birds singing in the morning or any similar soft sounds which normal people filter out were too loud for her.

That is why you move instead of raising a dispute, it's well known.
