What does it do instead of running? Any errors shown? What was the upgrade?

Whatever the answer is, your best way forward is probably to reinstall IE7.

What does the windows event viewer say? Have you tested the RAM? Sometimes fautly modules can cause this sort of problem. What power supply do you have in there? It won't be causing this fault but if you're using a cheap £5 Ebuyer thing then it WILL go pop soon.

from memory if you uninstall ie7 it should revert back to ie6 which i assume is also not working?

I would recommend just installing firefox and using that as your browser:

www.mozilla.com/firefox/

a much better browser IMO and less prone to spyware than ie.

This will at least allow you to web browse until you get ie working again.

IE 8 beta is out now, and has some good features. Have your tried that?

As ie is quite integrated with windows, then there may be some critical files missing. Run SFC (system file checker) from the run command.

Also try windows update to make sure xp is up to date

Couple of questions, Kev,
What was done and who did it?
As you 'had' it upgraded surely whoever did it is the best person to see first as they will know what was done.

Trying all sorts of different bits of advice may make it more difficult for the original maintenance guy to fix it.

Did they load a genuine XP system on when they upped the hardware?
As the 'cowboys' (sorry about the pun as you are from out west) refuse to do anything, you will have to try youself.

Usually, as Rob said, uninstalling IE7 using the Add/remove section resets your computer back to IE6 (This ONLY applies to XP where IE6 was previously installed).
Give it a try first by uninstalling IE7.
See if IE6 opens and runs as it should. If that works OK, you can reinstall IE7 from my link below.

If it will not uninstall, Then try to reinstall IE7 from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
It could be a corupt install of IE7 that is causing the problems.

it just wont work ive uninstalled and reloaded it from the windows web site
about 10 times it still wont work

This might be worth a punt. I've not seen your particular problem as yet, but i've used this approach for other "difficult" updates.

Delete any IE7 installer files.

Delete all temp files (Do a disk cleanup or purge from within IE6).

Restart into safe mode.

Navigate to C:\Windows and rename the folder called "Software Distribution" to something else (add a 1 to the end for example).

Restart the machine normally.

Download and install IE7 again.
