Check under every cabinet and in very corner for dead animals. Floor has been bleached cleaned. It's coming from one corner of the room where there is an undercounter fridge with the gas stove to the left of it and boiler to the right of it. Back of fridge does not smell of leaking compressor gas so if it the smell is still coming after shutting the main gas switch off for 2 days what else could it be? Also, the sulphur smell is not exactly like the fresh gas smell. The smell does not always to be present, but is stronger when the room might be warm/humid. It's not coming from the sink or connected pipes.

sounds like a drain smell - check outside manholes
Should have said, I am in a flat with the kitchen facing out into a balcony. All pipes are either visible within the kitchen for inspection or outside it.

Check your condensation tray behind the fridge. Might have gunge in it.
Yeah, Back of fridge does not smell of leaking compressor gas (including the tray of condense). Fridge working fine.

Try chatgpt. Just done so myself (or rather my wife has) and come up with lots of suggestions.
Waste pipes, condensate pipe, gas leak, even building materials.

'Rotten eggs' smell is classic sign of Hydrogen Sulfide, nasty stuff, created as a by product from decomposing organic matter. Can be found in sewers, any sign of a broken waste or soil pipe anywhere in the vicinity? Dead rat under the floor/in a void?

It's tiled over solid/concrete floor so no place for an animal to be deeper down but there could be a crack in a soil pipe or similar that I have not seen letting the smell out at peak times

People can smell certain stuff differently .
Just because you have turned gas off doesnt mean there is not a leak before the valve
It is completely free to call out the emergency service and they certainly do not mind false alarms so give them a call to rule out it being a gas leak

If the smell is different from fresh gas, is there a way the added mercaptan smell can be altered before it escapes (partially burnt off, for example) if there is a gas leak?

Dead mouse. Check around the fridge motor/electrics. We had that in our office once. Took weeks to find it. Realised it was worse when the photocopier was used. Turned out to be a dead mouse that had climbed inside and electrocuted itself on the circuit board!

My sister had it once too. Around Christmas time. Only found it when taking the Christmas tree down. TWO dead mice draped over the branches! We could only assume that her cat had caught, killed and brought them home and we think her toddler had found them first, thought they were tree decorations that had fallen off and put them back on the tree!

Although I don't like the idea of finding them, I am hoping it is something like this. But from what I have read, the rotting eventually stops and so the smell, perhaps after 2 weeks, and it has been going on for longer and is intermittent....

I found the cause!!!

Seems to be the fridge back evaporation tray
  • Originally thrown by it as did not smell when I last checked
  • Either an animal climbed into it and died (unlikely) or the condensed water was contaminated with food/milk that now sits inside the tray and might smell worse when condense wets it throughout the day
  • The tray is not removable but I have bleached coated its inside surface. The whole fridge internally was deep cleaned a few weeks before the smell started
