I would really appreciate any helpful, and very simply explained advice on this job.

I turned off the electricity at the mains and removed the ceiling rose thinking that the ikea instructions would allow me to do a simple DIY swap.

However....

There are 2 bundles of wires that come from my ceiling but the ikea fitting only has spece for 2 (well, space for 2 in L and 2 in N actually but their diagram only shows one in each).

There is a bundle of earth wires from each larger bundle and these are twisted to gether but there is no place for them on the new fitting.

Only one wire is encased in black plastic so I inserted this into the N slot on the new fitting.

There are then 3 wires encased in red:
One comes from the same bundle as the black one and, when inserted in L and the power is on, the light comes on but can't be turned off by the switch.
The other 2 are from the other bundle to the black one, when inserted in the L slot (either one of them and both together) the light does not turn on.

I would normally get an electrician to do anything serious as I appreciate that I don't know what I'm doing and electricity is dangerous, however I started this thinking it was straightforward so would love to be able to finish it.

Thanks Jean

You have two sets of twin and earth cables.

The set with red, black and earth(bare copper, should be sleeved green and yellow). In these set of cables the black is the neutral and the red the permanent live.

The set with two reds and earth are the switch lines/lives.

So you will require a loop connection, this is normally a small 5A connector.

The black neutral does to the neutral terminal of fitting.
The Permanent live of this cable and one of the reds from the switch lines are connected together in the 5A connector (with nothing else)

The second red switch line is then connected to the live of the fitting.

If there is no earth terminal on the fitting, then the two earths are connected together in another 5A terminal connector.

Unfortunately Ikea do not understand that there are number of ways to make a lighting circuit and this is a standard format, shame on them.
