Immerser heater - how do I switch it on?

Got an issue with this immersion heater again. It just stopped working, so I bought a new element but still no luck.

I checked the voltage at the connections of the element and it read 180V ac.

I then traced the immersion cable back 70cm or so to a switch in the same cupboard.

The black and red and the left read 242V ac, but the brown and blue on the right(with the switch on) read 180V ac.

help please?

Can't see how but maybe the switch is at fault?

If it were me, as a temp fix, join the red and brown, black blue and earths together.

Run without a switch and see how that goes.

turn the power off first.

Good idea!

just as I was about to do it I noticed that where the mains is connected to the switch, ie red and black, the screw terminals read L out, N out. The screw terminals that connect to the heater read L in, N in.

Is this correct?

depends on how you look at it...

mains in or appliance in.

more likey to mean, mains in.

normally labled 'load' and 'supply' these days.
