Hi All,

I never needed to use the immersion heater before in the house which is approx 4 years old, I came to switch it on today and the red light lights up on the switch outside the airing cupboard - but nothing else. I looked in the cupboard and the wire is coming out of the wall from the switch and it finished rolled up with tape over the ends near the copper tank but doesnt go any further ! Obviously this has to be wired in to somewhere but I can't see where ???

Any ideas ?

Could be that your HW cylinder has not had an immersion heater fitted.

Look on the top area of the cylinder, you will either see a blanking plug approx 4" dia, or an immersion heater sticking out of the tank.

If the latter is the case, then remove the plastic top and the connectors to wire to will be visible, assuming you are competent to do so for your own safety

Thanks for your very quick response Dave - there's a six sided nut which looks bigger then any spanner I have and this is on top of what must be the blanking plug you mentioned. It looks like it maybe sealed with something as it leaked out of the sides in the past. I think I can then take it I dont have an immersion heater fitted ? ! ?

Looks like a job for a plumber/electrician then.

Yes it does sound as though it is not there. I never fit immersions to old cylinders or replace them as there is the risk of damaging the old cylinder.

Because of this I always suggest customers get someone else in to do this, usually a sparks

i do them, but everytime i start one i regret it and wish i was doing something better like poking my eyes out

Thanks guys.....think I'll leave it to the pros....

Help much appreciated.

Mike
