Having searched posts relating to immersion heater problems, I think I may know the answer already, but.......

Last week the immersion heater failed - the fused switch was hot. We tried to replace the immersion element ourselves but merely managed to buckle the top of the tank (not terminally thank goodness). The plumber has today replaced the thermostat part of the element. There is heat getting into the tank now, but the switch is still heating up.

Is this likely to be an electrical problem, or is it perhaps that the element is past it?

Many thanks
Caroline

Could be a loose connection in the switch or a faulty switch. Personally I'd lean to replacing the switch in either case.
What size fuse is the circuit on in the consumer unit? What size fixed wiring? What size flex from the FCU to the immersion heater? What size immersion heater? Sorry for all the questions - just weighing up if you actually need a fused connection unit as opposed to a double pole switch. Whichever way you go - buy a decent brand.
