improving the quality of the lawn

Before the winter came I had my lawn looking really green and healthy

Just come to do my first cut of the year, and i'm finding loads of moss, weeds, and "brown stuff" ( not that! ) embedded in it now

What advice could you give me to restore the lawn to its former glory at a reasonable price?
