unless you can buy an adjacent property all you will have is repair bills and liability and no up side

presumably it was bought by the owners of one of the adjacent properties; either for their future use, or to prevent anyone else getting it and being a nuisance.

yes that would work but suspect a genuine "next door " purchaser would have been in negotiation and bought it for a perhaps 5-10k or a bit more to get it very very cheap and rule out loosing it at auction ??

They can sit and wait until someone wants to redevelop the plot. As long as they have understood their liabilities in terms of maintenance contribution and rates.
