Hi all
It says in the instructions for fitting my ceramic hob that you must not fit a fridge or washing machine underneath. Can anyone tell we why not. As I would like to install a freestanding fridge under mine (not the built in type)

probably because it get hot

Your hob gets hot. Your fridge keeps things cold. Bit of a conflict of interests really. Also there may be a risk of melting plastic bits on the fridge.

but surely the amount of heat that is thrown downwards from the hob is pretty limited? I mean, if it threw large amounts of heat downwards, you'd have to use heat resisting cable. And fridges produce heat that escapes at the top of the unit anyway (at the front of the worktop usually), so I dont see any problems. But it may invalidate the guarrantee. :(

covering of backsides! probably would be fine but everyone has to cover their backside bigtime nowadays! I think that the long term effect of having the hob over a fridge/wm would be discolouration of the top at worst.

on the other hand, since we (forum members) did not write the instructions why not ask the makers, there may be some really good reason behind the instruction

The surface of the hob (underside) has a max permitted temp (I think its 80). Not knowing the height of your worktop, which will dictate the gap under the hob its an not easy question.

As long as you have a reasonable gap between the base of the hob & the top of the fridge (I would think 40mm) you should not have a problem. I would place aluminum foil or similar as a heat reflector on top of the fridge.
The hob will be fitted with thermal cutouts... I spent a long time in domestic applaince development, things are tested to destruction & instructions are written to comply with standards. I fitted my hob over what was the cuttlery draw & the draw next to it held tea clothes, 10 years it was like that & that when the wattage of hobs was higher than 2days.

They used to be BSxxxx cant remember the numbers but probably been replaced by EU standards..Also Appliance carried KITE mark, they were tested to BEAB standards (british electrical approvals board)
