When drilling on the side of a house to attach the box is it better to drill into the bricks or into the mortar?

for screwholes you wan't to go into the brick the mortar just isn't tough enough to give a good grp.

for putting stuff like cables right through the wall its probablly easier to go through a morter joine.

Thanks for the advice plugwash!

Just a quick update for anyone who's interested..............my switch box is now up and running!!

There were no loud bangs, flashes or sparks and fingers crossed it will stay that way!!!

And no, I didn't call out an electrician, but even I would recommend doing so if you do not have the confidence to do the job yourself or do not have a death wish!!!

Thanks to all those people who guided me along the way!
