Could any one confirm if installing a boss strap for a basin and shower on a horizontal soil pipe a good idea? Will this ultimately cause gurgling problems with the basin and shower?

Generally it should be OK.
Gurgling is a sign of a trap being pulled (syphonic action) or pushed back. Something is wrong with the design or some other problem if that happens.
You can of couse even get adapters to fit a basin connection on the back of a WC e.g.

Used with antivac trap on the basin.
Of course as new drainage it should be approved by building control.
