Hi whats the best way of installing down-pipes the guttering outlets and drains are in place whats the best way of making sure my down pipes are level ?

We mark a plum line on the wall from the centre of the gully up to just shy of the soffit.

You can then use this line to measure the drill holes for the down pipe.

The line is usually a feint scratch using the edge of a bolster chisel or similar. Or if the masonry is smooth use a light pencil line.

We have used the laser also but it needs to be dull or fading light.

thanks its just installing and leveling the down pipes, the guttering is all in place. Is holding the downpipe in place while I put a level on to check for level and marking the clip holes not a recommended way of doing this?

No. Because this involves too many hands and relies upon the downpipe being dead straight which it often is not.

Have you actually read any of the posts?

So I need a chalk line to hang down from the gutter outlet or the center of were I offset the pipe back to the wall? How do I make sure the chalk line is level before marking it on the wall?

hold it ( on a nail or screw) @ top about half inch from the wall so it hangs free - let it settle , hold bottom agains wall with your toe - then snap the line , like drawing a bow  it`ll leave a faint line

Thanks. Were is best to hang it from? the center of the gutter outlet ? To give the center of the down-pipe?

If you are using that pants square guttering then the outlet needs to be central over the gully below.

If your downpipes are round then you can off set the outlets relative to the gullies and bring the spouting into line via the swan-necks.

So, always plumb up from the centre of the gully. The gully should dictate where the outlet goes.

Thanks, How do you plumb up from the gully though. With the plumb line need to be held from above.

Use a 1200mm spirit level.

And draw a line up with the spirt level isn't that doing what the plumb line was going to do?
