Hi, I’ve just removed my old PIR halogen security light and bought a new LED PIR security light. My problem is the wiring from switch is only live and neutral but the wiring on the light is live, neutral and earth. Can I connect the new light? Where does the earth wire go from light? I’ve bought an IP65 junction box.
I’ve also contacted two electricians who have done work for me in the past, but neither of them have replied to me up to now.
Thanks

In theory it must be terminated, in practice fold it back and tape it up for future use if required.
Have you misunderstood the question?

In practice it must be terminated - i.e. connected to an earth.

Aggy:

Are you sure there is not an earth wire in the cable that has been cut off?

If not you will have to find a plastic/class 2 light that does not need an earth connection - or, of course run an earth wire back to where there is an earth connection.

If the existing light didn’t have the cpc connected then I’d be surprised.

Even if there is a cut back cpc, you have no way of really telling if it’s connected and continuous back to the CU

Thanks all, it’s sorted. There is an earth wire after all

Okay..... so there's an earth wire in the cable at the light end. Yaay, brilliant, winner!!!!

But it is of no use unless it is actually connected to earth at the other end.
You can simply test that using a multimeter. If there is no continuity to earth, you'll need to find the other end of the cable and connect it to earth.
