My apartment building has an intercom system connected to the doorbells for each flat. The handset we have in our flat is a bit rubbish and it's quite hard to hear what people are saying when they talk through it from the front door. Can we just replace our handset for a newer one, or would it have to be the whole system that gets replaced? (which obviously needs the agreement of the other tenants...)

Depends on what system is installed. Some will take a universal handset from the likes of fermax. Others require a specific handset for the intercom system. Any info on the mnfr of the existing system. Plus the problem may be with the external speaker/microhpone not the handset.
