IOM TT

ok
1982. Trouble is, as time has gone on since 1907, the racing speeds have got faster and faster. Time to call an end to it now I think, it is becoming too expensive in lives.
too expensive? For who?

This mentions that the race was stopped due to weather. Maybe too late. Always difficult as the rider should cope. F1 different - they stop when they can't see.

It was stopped because of the incident. The weather was fine and the Birchalls were on for a lap record.
I was meant to go this year , had to pull out last minute, and glad I did . Between the shortened races due to weathet and deaths the atmosphere seemed deflated. I watched it all live on ttplus and don’t know if it’s my imagination but there seemed to be a lot less people there.

Its probably worth a 3 day visit......sort of a cross between the lake district and Scotland's west coast. It's not as prosperous as what you may think, and some areas of Douglas are a bit needy. No caravans allowed (I think) and Manx radio tells you in the morning where the speed traps are!
Hideously expensive during the TT, not as bad during the GP (which includes the classic bikes) but there's a Premier Inn in Douglas now.
John :)

They reckon visitors by boat was up 10% from 2019 - more than expected. Never been so don't know ways of getting there. They expected lower numbers due to covid and travel chaos.

I think the boat goes out from Liverpool.

At one time the TT was part of the bike Grand Prix series

Used to be a similar ? Type road race in Macau ???

Used to be a road race in Scarborough went to that a couple of times

Plus the park race at Abedare in Wales

When I had a yacht in North Wales we sailed there quite a few times, usually staying in St Mary, sometimes it was a stopping off point en route to Northern or Southern Ireland but we stayed there for a week or longer on at least two occasions. Beautiful place. Many of my sailing friends from Brum and sorrounding areas were bikers and would often sail across for the TT and stay at Douglas, I was always envious of those trips, would like to have done it.

Olivers Mount?

That’s it Oliver’s mount used to go up there for the week end racing

Mind you that was a good while back

When I was last there Roger Marshall raced the Norton challenger there

Bike did not do much in its day but some American bought it and threw a load of money at it and entered it in various twins racing ( battle of the twins series)
