Ireland - storage heater operation

I`ve just rented a place but I have a problem with heaters. Two of them have switchers and work instantly. My landlord said the other two come on based on a timer and he also said the storage heater button is at the wall switch.

I would be very grateful if you could tell me how the heaters work. Because I have no clue. I don`t know anything about them.

The Horstmann timer is for a water heater, typically an immersion heater in a hot water cylinder. I suppose it might have been repurposed for a storage heater, but in the UK they usually have a timer in, or adjacent to, the electricity meter.

I don't recognise the controller marked "710"

The "other heaters" are storage heaters and have to be turned on at night, this will (should) heat up the blocks inside them, and the heat will slowly escape into the room during the day. It is liable to run out by evening. At this time of year you probably don't want them on. It is common for them to stop working if people put towels or washing on top, because this makes them overheat and the safety link melts.

The two "directly" ones look like they might be combined heaters, with both an ordinary heating element and storage blocks inside them. This sort usually has two connected cables, because the off-peak supply for storage is only on at night.

If you can find a maker's name and model number on them, you could ask the manufacturer for operating instructions. Dimplex is a very common brand, and part of a conglomerate that also manufactures under other trade names.

I've found attached guideline but still the heaters won't work. I set the day button 0 and the night to +2. But I didn't get any red lights as it says on the guideline.

The red light you mention probably comes on when the off-peak timer switches on. Might be around midnight, dependent on your tariff.


show us the timeswitch please. It is probably next to your electricity meter(s), or inside them. Show the meters and consumer units as well, and the various cables around and between them.

If you are in the Republic of Ireland it is not part of the UK. The regulations, tariffs and equipment may be different, so you may do better if your thread is moved to "Electrics Outside the UK" and mentions RoI.
