Someone told me that if all you do is change something like for like (socket for a socket, a pendant for a pendant etc), then you dont need to do a certificate for it even if it is in a kitchen or other special location.. Can someone please clarify this as my boss makes us do minor works forms for EVERYTHING we do!! Thanks

It is not notifiable as far as Part P of The BR's goes, but, depending on which camp your boss is in, he will either require you to complete a MWC or not.

The ECA believe that with a straight swap, a MWC is not required, but of course you would still take readings to make sure it is safe, ie IR & EFLI.

Your boss is correct. The certificate is a record of who last worked on the installation.

Whether or not a job is notifiable or not has no effect on the certification that BS7671 requires you to issue!

But to answer your question, replacements (and they don't have to be like for like) that involve no new cabling are non-notifiable, distrubution boards are the exception, they are always notfiable, also additional points in rooms that arn't kitchens or special locations or outdoors are non-notifiable, as is work on equipotential bonding, the full details are available in the DIYnot wiki
