Issue fitting overflow cover in sink

I’ve got a metal overflow cover I’m trying to fit in a sink overflow hole. But I’m struggling to push it in and when it does eventually go in, the outer side splits. It is the correct part. Is there a trick to fitting these covers?

The sink is around 5 years old. The cover is new (the old one seemed to develop the same problem - ended up splitting in half).

Measure hole size and match.
Could be an odd size so it's possible the one you have is too big

Sure it's metal? They tend to plastic these days, especially if it's snapping.

As above that's chromed plastic.
It's also a wash hand basin, sinks are in kitchens and utility rooms.

Plastic crap.
As Andy said, either leave it off or buy a box full and just keep replacing them when they fail.

Put a dab of silicone on them to keep it in place.
