Some of you in the industry may have been aware of this, many here probably are not aware of it.

However it is now official, as of 31 March 2004 the colour coding of Cables will change to fall into line with Europe.

The current cable colours will still be allowed to be used until 31 March 2006, after that date you will no longer be able to use them.

Further, no installation must contain both the new and old colour schemes. A draft ammendmend change is in progress at the moment, and the IEE intend to make this available to the public on or after 31 March 2004.

There will also be a new Appendix to BS7671:2002 which will explain how to undertake new work in an installation populated by the existing woiring methodology, it is likely that in order for the older wiring to be compliant, all cores will be required to be sleeved in the new colours.

To see the New scheme, use this link to a PDF document at Nexans.

I have yet to find a supplier who has the new colour codes in cables, sleeving, or insulation tapes,
I am doing a full rewire at this time, And would like to identify the cable cores to the new codes,
I recieved the Email from "Edmundsons" too 8)

It is unlikely we will start to see any of the new coded cables until April, from then on I think that we will see deals on current stock so that the manufacturers can off load all there current stock before the deadlines expire.

One thing that we will all need to be careful of is ordering codes. These will need to be different in order to differentiate from the existing system, and so far the only compnay that has published such codes are Pirelli.

Well, its about time ye got up to speed with the rest of us! In relation to when exactly this is coming into practice, Many of the larger retailers in N. Ireland are currently selling off old stock. And at a very good price too! I emptied the van, went to belfast, and bought 25 100M reels of 16mmsq T&E for £67stg each! (I wanted them for house wiring) There double the size i'm used to, but at that price i wasn't going to argue.

I Always Use "Pirelli." Cable, (Where Possible), Even From Erm?"Screwfix"
But Still Suppliers Don't List New Colour Coded Cable Etc, Even Though They Know About The New Colour Codes,

And What Happens After 2006, When You Come To Install An Extra Circuit Comprising The "New Codes", In An Installation With "Old Wiring Codes",
"After 2006 You Cannot Mix The Two Colour Codes"
Do You State To The Customer That She/He Will Require The Whole Installation To Be Rewired To The New Wiring Colour Codes??? 8)

Tell ya' what, Screwfix aint that bad......started using them for screws, drill bits etc next day delivery...sorted. Had loads of problems with previous suppliers.....
