Wiring colours for storage heater switch (20 AMP) is reversed

You can remove the switch and put it on.
I thought you were postulating ("short wire") difficulties in dealing with the connection of conductors to the terminals.

If one did as you suggest, one would presumably have to be pretty precise in placing the SAT if one was to avoid the risk of the terminal screw being tightened onto it when it was pushed into the termina,

I personally just wouldn't do it (like that), but others might.

The deal with fitting such items is to properly connect the flex and secure it with the cord grip first, with the switch away from the wall.
Then cut and strip the wires in the wall to the proper length, and fit the switch onto them.
Tape of any sort is not required.
