I don't know if Cadent operate in Jersey, but I would have expected them or the equivalent organisation to have shut off the supply after residents called to say they could smell gas.

News media has said residents called the Fire Brigade because they could smell gas, Fire Brigade could finf nothing untoward and left the scene hours earlier .
a large portion of reported gas leaks are false alarms and in recent times many of these explosions are not actual gas related
firebrigade would have called in the relevant emergency gas company as standard practise they would not be the ones to say safe or not
Not necessarily, depends on the Fire Brigade concerned, and Jersey has separate conditions to mainland , Some Brigades carry Gas monitors on Fire Appliances to check gas leakage , Other Brigades will turn out the Gas Authority to smell of gas . Hampshire Fire Service has sent their Urban Search and rescue team and specialist equipment to Jersey .
well if that is the case with jersey and that is how they work its a very dangerous way of working no mainland brigade that i know of would think themselves more qualified than emergency service provider to decide what is safe. Attending gas escapes requires a lot of training and can be difficult enough when attending a standard house while attending a reported leak at a block of flats there is a lot more that comes into it especially were gas in voids is concerned and that can catch out guys with decades of gas leak tracing experience , To properly have checked those flats would take several hours .
What sort of gas monitors do they carry and how often do they get calibrated Cadents are state of the art at over a couple of grand a piece and calibrated every single day
I suppose in an ideal world we'd no longer be running gas to residential properties, maybe even most commercial properties as well. I fully understand installations are generally very safe if installed and maintained properly, however when it does go wrong ...
If elec was as cost effective as gas, I'd do away with my boiler and go full elec.

some of the most recent so called gas explosions have been illegal drug production houses using various chemicals , some illegal alcohol production places . Petrol used insurance claims and also something as simple as expanding foam but after the initial this is a gas explosion the actual cause never gets wide spread publicity so people are still left to believe it was gas
Where in the Gas Safety Code Instructions does it state call the Fire Service ?

If we couldn't find any gas leak with a reported smell, we would call the fire brigade for a "chemist"
