joining 6mm twin and earth - drilled through cable

Lets simplify things:

If the old cable is 10.0 mm you must use 10.0 mm to do this concealed joint.

the main cores had about 8 strands and the new stuff had about 8 strands. the copper was also very similar in diameter.

Well I have just ordered 1m of 10mm cable from ebay so will soon be able to compare!

Most cores of most sizes consist of seven strands.

6.0 mm cable tends to have a solid earth wire, although I think it is available with a stranded earth, but it's not seen much.

It is the length and cable diameter that affects the volt drop. But ultimately the cable must have a low enough resistance (ie must be thick enough) so that it does not heat up the insulation too much..

Indeed, but that doesn't mean that the current carrying capacity of the cable is affected by its length.

Maybe you should have bought one of these off ebay:

Then you could have accurately measured the strands, and worked out the csa of the cable.
