Can someone tell me why most joist hangers (timber to timber) are 50mm in width, when mmost timber joists are 2" (47mm). Why the 3mm difference? I am undertaking a small decking project and want to purchase 47mm joist hangers for 2" x 4" joists.

why are you bothered?
when fixing the timber into the hanger, all joints end up tight anyhow.
i guess it is to allow for nominal sizing of timber.

I always thought it depending on who made the hangers as foreign and some UK presses may still use imperial pattern stamps?
Were did you get 2"= 47mm?
It also depends on who processed the timber, and whether it is 50mm rough sawn or 47mm regularised

The timber yard that I'm buying the joists from advertises the 4"x2" timber as 47mm cuts. I have measured them and they are 47mm. I was just concerned that with a small gap between the timber and the hanger, you could end up with rain water sitting on the bottom of the joist and rotting the timber? Would a professional decker just use 50mm hangers and not be bothered small gaps??
when i have to use joist hangers on a deck then i use whatever comes along. 3mm gap is absolutley nothing, as is the amount of water that will sit in there. If they get wet, then the ret of the deck is alreday wet anyway. As long as it can all breathe and dry out then it doesnt matter
