how you wire it depends on how you are powering the fan, whether it has a timer, whether the cieling rose is a loop-in or junction box system, other factors. there are many ways to connect a fan.

heres what i want m8, i have a pendant light fitting in bathroom(why i dont know)i need to move that about 12 inches,i`ve also just bought off a friend a xpelair dx200t 4" extractor fan with a timer.....also have a double pole isolator switch......i know how to wire it up by looking in reference section on here but that shows all connections to ceiling rose and not a junction box.......any1 got a diagram or know where i might find 1 on net?
cheers

It's been said before, and will be again, but tonight it's your turn.

A ceiling rose has terminals for permanent live, switched live, neutral and earth.

A lighting junction box has terminals for permanent live, switched live, neutral and earth.

If you can't see the similarity between the two then you really shouldn't be doing this...

amazing what info is in the for reference section. go read it. and if you cant understand the wiring diagrams, you shouldnt attempt to do the work

got the junction box wiring up sorted now thanks........is this set up right?

i was thinking of just changing the ceiling rose with a j`Box (4 T)and connecting new light fitting to that, but this diagram shows it conneted to switch and switch connected to J`Box...........which method is right?

you can a swap cieling rose with a 4t junction box.

the way you have wired it is fine but it will only run when the light is on. when the light goes off, so will the fan. it won't overrun which i suspect you wanted it to.

you need a permenant live to the fan, as well as the switched live. All you have is a live and neutral and earth. you need 4 core flex to connect the fan to the isolator, and 3 core and earth cable all the way from the switch to the isolator, to carry the permenant live through.

No - as pointed out above.

What worries me is that your diagram shows the 3 cores of a 3C+E cable between the isolation switch and the light fitting - what have you connected those conductors to at the light?

i was just using a combination of diagrams from reference section.......i have a pendant fitting in bathroom which i need to re-position (with different fitting),so was gonna connect in feed, out feed, switch feed to new 4T JB and run a lenght of TWIN+E for new light fitting.....thats as much as i had planned really....apart from channeling back out to outside bathroom for 3pole iso switch and back in for fan situated over shower tray

the fan is a vectaire MF100HCT Cord op/Timer/Neon & Humidistat....it will be positioned in shower encloshure on ceiling, vented out of roof, roof cowl and that. its gonna run off light fitting
what u mean by selv?

Yes, but which Zone is your shower ceiling in? If you're going to do electrical work in bathrooms you should learn about the Zones, and what's allowed in each one first.

Here's a handy guide: http://www.niceic.org.uk/downloads/NL139supp.pdf

And what IP rating is the fan? If you're going to be installing electrical items in bathrooms you should learn about IP ratings first.

Here's a handy guide: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/DataSheets/IPNumbers.htm

SELV is Separated Extra Low Voltage. 12V, usually.

Finally - can't believe we've all missed this so far - are you aware of Part P of the Building Regulations?

yes i am aware of part P,my mate from work is gonna check it after i`ve done work.........hes qualified..i know about zones..been doing alot of reading from the wiring and lighting book i just received.
just checked website the IP = IPx4...and its suitable for installation in zone 1 or 2

Don't forget the RCD if it's in Zone 1.

As for Part P - does your comment mean that you're aware of it, don't intend to comply, and you're having the work checked by someone qualified as a normal precaution, or that you're having it checked because you think that will mean you are complying with Part P?

I've got no problem with the former, but if the latter is the case then I have to warn you that you're in for an unwelcome surprise....
