Despite having a fountain fitted with a filter in my pond (which measures 6' x 3' x 2') I cannot seem to keep the water clear enough to see my goldfish.

The water is green in colour but does NOT smell at all.

Should the filter be on 24hrs a day ?

Is there anything I can do to keep the water crystal clear ?

I have heard about products you can put in the pond but the reports are conflicting.

It really is annoying.

The green is algae growing on the nutrients in the water. I presume you feed your fish? You have to lower the nutrient level. I should think you will need at least a 2' square filter, and it has to run all the time to stabilise the various organisms that will deal with the nutrients. You can also use plants to suck up the nutrients. Rushes do this well apparently. Another way is more interesting.

like a few have said, get a UV fitted, that will cure your green water problem

I'm just in the process of building a new koi pool myself

The UV may sort the green problem, but it does not deal with the nutrient level.
