Keston Boiler faults, issues and problems, advice please

So anybody knows what E14 stands for, and whether I can plan to replace the boiler without changing the flue? I read that other brands would require wider flue and that may be difficult to install

The only reason most Kestons were installed is because they were wanted to be fitted in a basement.

Other makers have not addressed that specific requirement with suitable fluing.

In virtually all cases a ground floor boiler could be fitted, in an external cabinet or small brick enclosure, but the owners don't want that solution.

To add to the unreliability of the Keston they were also usually seriously over powered for the heating load.

Not sure if they still do but British Gas used to cover them on maintenance contracts.

Kestons still use the plastic flue system, but only maddest fool would buy another if they've already experienced Keston ownership.

You would still need to change the flue Danny - especially as the existing one is probably the wrong grade plastic anyway.

OP - I have a feeling E14 is a controller error.

Not worth repairing. We're going to be saying now that all calls to a Ferroli or Keston boiler (other than services) are for surveying a replacement. Not even going to entertain trying to maintain the heaps of shyte, or further line the pockets of the manufacturers with profits from their spares.

Thanks all. Tony, what do you mean with: "they were also usually seriously over powered for the heating load" if I may ask? I found that when the CH temperature was left at around 60 the underfloor heating didn't heat up properly. Do you mean they have to run at a higher temperature than other boilers?

No he doesn't mean that, the UFH temp problem will not be related directly to the boiler.

So if I want to replace the Keston and considering it is in a basement with 10 meters of vertical and horizontal flue, can I use for example a Worcester if I replace the flues with wider ones (assuming there is enough space)?

An ATAG will be an alternative and can use a similar two pipe system. We've fitted a few to replace Kestons in basements. They are much better built than a Keston, not that that would be difficult to achieve.

Unfortunately ATAG (which are Dutch) have recently been taken over by the Italian outfit Ariston MTS, not a company with a glowing customer review base in the UK.

Thanks Simon. Do you know if there is an alternative to use any other boiler if replacing the double flue of the Keston with wider ones, assuming it is possible?
