I have seen propane powered blow torches advertised for killing roots of persistent weeds. Would an electric heat gun do the same job or do they not get hot enough.

They don't really kill the roots, they kill off the top growth. They are an entertaining toy but a couple of weeks after use you will have a fresh healthy crop of weeds again.
