Hi all,

I got a decent deal a few weeks back on some Kingspan K5 external insulation. I am planning to self install it, and get a guy to bead and finish it.

I've had mixed advice on prep
- Some say you need to prime the back and front of the board, to prevent it absorbing too much from the adhesive / render
- Some say they never use it, as if it gets wet at all before rendering the boards deform and it looks aweful

Have I made a terrible blunder buying this, and does anyone know if the back does need priming before applying adhesive to the wall?

Or any other tips that would be helpful!

Thanks
Tim

no priming of the board is necessary. The wall needs priming for the adhesive.
And the meshed basecoat is primed for top coat render.

Kingspan have a fairly detailed guide online somewhere for k5.
And you can ring their tech support.

Thank you @Godwasaplasterer , glad to have a pro give their experience. So I should prime the wall it's going on to? It's a newly built blockwork wall.

I had sent an email to Kingspan last night, so hopefully they reply.

Are the things I hear about it getting wet before rendering and never looking right, true?

Thanks
Tim

Yes the wall should still be primed. It’s very similar to pva , but be sure to use their products.
Only joints and edges need protecting from the weather after installation. Ideally they’re meant to be installed and rendered in short time.

I’ve only used them twice on small jobs. with decent results. so no pro .
If you have them stored outside though they need to be kept out of the rain /undercover.

Ok I'll see what primer they advise. A local firm has recommended Accrofix Pate.
It is outside, but completely covered in plastic sheeting

no cavity?

Nope, block on flat. The rest of the house is that way, and for self building seemed like a quicker and cheaper option. And it's what all the Europeans do apparently!

Thanks again.....
