i have replaced the lights and switches and know need to connect the switch and lights.
the switches i have are 2 way 2 gang with termanals at the top and at the bottom of the switch and are labled as follows
COMMON L1 L2
L2 COMMON L1
how do i connect the wires

give us a chance..
what wires do you have..
what lights are youtrying to wire and in what configuration?

pictures speak a thousand words, so crack out the digital camera and take some pics

there is 1 red live and all the other wires are marked
common
L1
L2
but i never took note where the wires came from as the wires are all marked
so if the live wire goes to L1where do i connect the other wires marked
common
L1
L2

if you have an L1 and an L2 then is there a second switch that controls these lights also?

you bought a 2 gang switch , so presumably there was a 2 gang there before switching 2 sets of lights?

thats right
i have the kitchen lights controled with 2 switches one is a one gang for the kitchen lights with
L1 / L2 / Common
the second switch is for the kitchen and the out side lights with 6 termanals
COMMON / L1 / L2 at the top of the switch
L2 / L1 / COMMON at the bottom of the switch

Take some photos of each wall box, and post them here.

You are describing the back of the switch which is pointless - we know what is on the back of that. It is the cables in the wall we need to know about.

You need to post them here for everyone to look over. I have posted them for you, hope thats ok.

First thing to do is to get all the earths terminated together and all the neutrals (blacks only) terminated together in their own blocks, and tuck these out of the way in the back of the box.

It looks like someone has just populated all the terminals with cables and fet them through to that ugly joint box. You may not need all the terminals connected, so this is confusing matters.

What lights was this originaly switching? Any other switches?

More than likely, your LIVE down the wall connects to the two blues - giving each of the commons a feed.

The L2's would not be used - put them each in their own terminal blocks as they will become live.

The L1's from the switch will connect to the L1's down the wall. As you only have two L1's from the switch, and 3 L1's down the wall, you will have to put two L1's into one L1 if that makes sence. This will mean one switch will bring on two lights (or sets of lights). This could be altered by moving the L1's around.

We really need to know how many lights, how they used to be switched, and if there are any other switches though.
