I certainly do - I'm not very keen on the strip mastic anyway. Whatever happens, you don't want water getting into the worktop!

Are you talking about a SS metal inset sink?
We set the sink or hob into a footprint/template of painters tape, and after setting/forcing the sink rim into a ring of clear silicone we lift the tape, and any squeeze out silicone comes with it - this leaves the metal edge glued to the work top without any unsightly silicone showing.
The way to keep any penetrating moisture off the raw laminate cut-out is to seal it with say Evo Stik Contact Adhesive or similar - same with the hob cut-out and tap holes. The back edge of the laminate work top to be sealed with edging bonded with contact adhesive (ironed on if possible).
