Knife Crime

yes I read that report a while back, however its been discredited and 13 years old

Oh and its a right wing think tank The Centre for Policy Studies (CPS), Civitas, and the Institute for Economic Affairs (IEA) all received the lowest score from independent watchdog Transparify in its latest transparency ratings. The three organisations were part of a list of seven ”highly opaque and deceptive think tanks in Britain that take money from hidden hands behind closed doors”, the report said.

Longer prison sentences are not the way to cut crime
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/jul/16/longer-prison-sentences-civitas?newsfeed=true

In our experience at Nacro, all that prison does in these cases is to delay the next offence from taking place. A slightly longer sentence just means a slightly longer delay in reoffending. We already know from other research that short-term prison sentences don’t reduce reoffending, particularly for serious repeat offenders. We also know that the length of custodial sentences has been increasing significantly over the past decade with no causal link to a reduction in reoffending. It concerns me that the findings from this research are being used by some to advocate longer sentences in order to reduce crime.

Quite agree, but the problem is the ones on the outside still committing crime, knowing that in the unlikely case they get caught, the courts will do little more than make them stand in the naughty corner. If, on the other hand, they faced 15 years minimum for burglary, 20 years for assault, life for rape or murder, then they may think twice about committing a crime. Giving them an anklet with a silly name just doesn't cut the mustard.
why do you write such stuff, its proven to be untrue.

how many more times do i have to tell you: harsher sentences dont reduce crime

America: number of people in prison went from 200,000 to over 2 million -with no reduction in crime.

So please stop peddling your lack of ability to absorb facts, It really is terribly boring.

Stands to reason, if someone is inside they can't be committing crime on the outside.

This is very true, and something I think everybody here agrees with. But the most important question is, how do we avoid the need to use prisons in the first place?

We have 2 options really, the first being to carry on as we are and poorly fund policing, CPA, prisons, remand services, and create an environment where crime continues to pay because of a combination of low conviction rates and few opportunities for poorly educated poor people in society, which means burglaries and stabbings will continue to rise, or the government starts funding the state properly again to provide better opportunities, take more people out of poverty, and improve policing, CPA and prisons so that they can actually catch people an rehabilitate people.

But for some reason, most people prefer option 1 at the moment - people have voted to do nothing about crime.

The government needs to spend a lot more in policing
There also has to be adequate deterents to crime.
There has to be a recognition that not all criminals can be reformed.
Some criminals are victims of their environment and with help can turn their lives around.
The problem is that the touchy feely brigrade believe that all criminals are victims of their upbringing and need understanding rather than punishment.
Also the liberal attitude of the middle classes to issues like drug taking is fueling criminal behavior amongst the lower orders.
The idea that sniffing cocaine is victimless crime and should not be condemned is the reason you have a lot of these stabbings and shootings.

The government needs to spend a lot more in policing

It goes deeper than that. Our local police are doing a better job with a new commissioner, but the CPA so often fails them - criminals often get short sentences, and when they are banged up, there is no rehabilitation program, no support. What so many people fail to realise is that criminals are only locked up for a short time and carry on again the moment they are let out.

So yes, life imprisonment for all crime could work, but that would actually be more expensive to the state, i.e. us taxpayers than trying to make a better society. A world with less crime really is much nicer - you only have to visit places with very high crime rates to be reminded of that.

So what then, de criminalise everything , then there will be no crime. We can close prisons, disband the police force, save a fortune for the country.

When the government invested in the police and prison service, and crime prevention, and crime went down.
When they cut funding, crime went up.

This trend is repeated all over the country.

Stop pretending it isn't happening, and stop pretending that government cuts are not the problem. As usual, your only suggestion is "lock em up".

Locking people up after they have stabbed somebody is not the way to make the country a safer and happier place. We really need to stop the crime - and that is not an impossible task.

But why would the government want to reduce crime? For them, it's a waste of money. So if you support austerity and cuts to youth services, policing, CPA, remand services etc. then stop moaning about crime and get yourself a stab proof vest and some good locks on your doors.

Very easy solution ......Carrying a knife on the streets results in an automatic sentence. Two years.

And what happens when they are let out after 2 years, or 12 months for good behaviour?
And what about the ones that stab somebody before a copper finds a knife on them?

Sad thing is, a lot of people will just say that is a price worth paying for safer streets. Until it's their own kid, or their street is still not safer, they won't change their mind.

Gladiator style arenas, crims fight to the death, winner gets to fight another day, pay per view on Sky box office.

We have that already - all we need to do is change the law to allow public broadcasting of CCTV images.
