Knife Crime

Ah yes, the golden age of 2014. But yes, this is why I say more or less. The last few years have had more murders than previous years. Hopefully the long term trend will return.

Yup, last year might have been better, or one metric might have been higher but all the rest lower.

The long term trends are clear and obvious, the day to day, week to week not so much.

But you still can't think of a specic time that was less violent?

No they're not " clear and obvious" ; the "facts" are a moveable feast.
How many (what would have formerly been reported) violent crimes, are no longer reported?

It is pretty hard to compare murder rates over time in UK.

Murder rates havent been recorded as since 1972, murder, manslaughter and infanticide have been lumped together as homicide.
Since 1998 multiple murders have been counted not as 1 murder but the number of victims.
Harold Shipman certainly bumped the figures in 2002.

Put me in charge and I make crime (and criminals) disappear.
Plenty of rocks out in the North Sea.

Well someone was complaining about how it's all so much more violent these days than back on the old days. It turns out they were right, but those golden years were 2014.

You mean... five years of tory austerity... made it worse.

All crime, not just violent crime, is higher nowadays. Official figures cannot be relied upon because of vested interests playing it down, and a lot of it not getting reported because it's not worth the bother.

Just walk around any of our city centres, day or night, to see the truth. Walk through Piccadilly and Market Street in Manchester on a Saturday and you will count hundreds of crimes in a short time. It never used to be like that. Sheffield is even worse. Bradford worse still. Liverpool and Leeds not as bad.

I reckon the police just need bigger tasers and more leeway to use them.

And we need more prisons, by all means put up taxes and build more prisons, fund the prisons by getting the inmates to package xmas cards as far as I care. Get the buggers tasered and off the streets

Tougher sentences and more punishment is not the answer.

Brigadier and Andy11 claim that no statistics exist so they can believe whatever they see chalked on a wall.
