knock out below wall plate

Hi
I am removing a section of 9" solid wall about 1.2m wide, up stairs in a semi, i'm taking it out all the way up so there is nothing above the wall except the wall plate on the inner skin. there is not a join in the wall plate near the opening. not sure what if anything I need to put in, was thinking 2x brick size lintels to be safe?

any advice much appreciated,

Presumably the wall plate is only holding up the roof? Then a 4"x4" piece of timber would be fine. Just notch it a little each end to fit in with the brick course.
