Knocking out brickwork

Hi

I have lots to do in a house we have bought. We want to do as much as we can to reduce costs.

One thing we have to do is take out the brickwork around the chimney breast (its like a mantel piece and shelf going around the chimney and the wall). What are the best tools to use for this?

I am a complete novice so any advice welcome!

A lump hammer and a bolster chisel.

Any decent DIY shop will sell them.
