when you give a customer their bill, do they take into account how much their house might have gone up in value, in some cases over 100%. They don't moan about that.
How can young people starting up, get on the housing ladder. Labour costs have'nt gone up with house prices.

For chrissakes Richard, pi** off you boring little man! Can we have one, just ONE thread where you don't get all Ben Elton on us. Please, keep the political debate to the political threads. This is about labour costs, as in pounds per hour, not about what Labour has cost us.

I have never resorted to posting like this before, but you really are starting to grate. I've mentioned whinging socialists before, please prove me wrong by by being a socialist who DOESN'T whinge and whine about the Tories all the time. Your lot has had two terms in power, you can't blame the Tories any more!

The point I'm trying to make is, do you think labour costs she be alot higher than they are,as to most people owning ones own home is about making ones life alittle easier when they get older, not having to pay rent.
I see alot of work going on in someones second house which they have brought to do up and sell, being able to borrow money because of there equity, and they want the job done and pay you as little as possible.
You might have children of your own, are they going to be living with you in there thirtys +. Wages have not kept up with house prices.

Sorry Adam mate, I dont wont you getting all shook up,I didn't know you made the rules here, take some deep beaths "little man" hardly, its little men that lose their cool!!!

did a pump change job and charged £110 which i know customer thought was 'not cheap'... wasn't a quick job either as gate valves were letting by.

Earlier he had swankingly told me his property was now worth more than £300k having bought for £180k a few years ago. that sort of attitude really gets my back up.

I think the 'problem' is that people see their (assets) homes as something they own for 'free' and which nowadays increases in value without them having to do anything about it.
Labour costs for whatever job they have done has to be paid out of their own pocket. With that they don't realise that because of inflation etc trades people encounter higher costs also and have to increase their prices accordingly, which keeps the inflation going etc (never ending circle).

Same when people buy a new house for lots of money (won't talk about the quality of new houses, waist of money buying one ;) ) financed by a mortgage and then grumbling about the costs of installing a quality floor (which they have to pay out of their 'own' pocket in stead of with a mortgage).

If you had your labour costs linked to property prices you would soon go out of business, as nobody would bother to hire you. How about when property plummets, will you reduce you prices because people will be in negative equity? I think not.

I'm all for being paid a reasonable rate; link it to inflation, transport costs, training and experience and materials, but dont get silly about it, you will end up out of business.

without sounding political Adam or offensive like you were to richardp, i believe the government are trying to make it easier for the first time buyer with building projects aimed at the low cost end of the market.
