I am due to be laying a laminate floor this weekend and currently have a carpet in the room. I have been advised to lay the floor directly on top of the carpet as it is a thinnish carpet. Is this wise? Or is it advisable to remove the carpet.

heeeelllooo tonyjos and welcome :D :D :D

without going into detail no
you should remove the carpet

imagine spilling a pint of water on the carpet then covering it with polythene for 6 months eventualy the smell gets out

I understand your point, however the floorboards are all uneven beneath the carpet and the property is rented therefore it may be removed 12-18 months from now.

Let me see if I understand your question.

You are asking

"Please will you tell me it's OK to do a dreadful, poor-quality, bodge job, because I can't be ar5ed to do it properly?"

Buggies will love your option.

Remove the carpet, install hardboard or plywood to level out, then use proper underlayment (foam) and install your floor.
