My house has ground floors of woodblock (parquet) which are in need of renovation
I would prefer to fit a laminate or solid wood over rarther than renovate the existing floor
Is this a good idea and do I need underlay
What would you recommend Laminate,Real wood,or engineered wood

What ever you select, make sure the underlayment you use DOES NOT contain a DPM - which will cause condensation and effect the parquet floor (could lift up in the end)

Forget the solid wood option if you plan to fit over the top, laminate or engineered will probably be ok, although there is a 'risk' when laying over the parquet.

As has been said, never use a DPM product and fibreboards would be better than the thinfoam underlay.

    Thank you for your replies
I am thinking of using a heavy duty laminate the type that can be used in kitchens and bathrooms (commercial) grade.
Would this be suitable over the parquet with a fibreboard underlay

None of this really makes clear sense, bathroom stuff means the sub board is dimensionally more stable than standard HDF cores but it has no relation at all to how hard wearing the laminate is, nor does it reflect how suitable it is over parquet.

Look at really good quality brands like Pergo, they are engineers superbly and have the highest quality picture and wear layers in the laminate world.
