Lamp Shades

The plastic rings i have seen usually snap out, the brackets are made in metal to fit Continental lampholders, and the snap in plastic removable insert reduces them to 22mm for UK use
The first time I came across this format the adapter was separately packaged, sellotaped to the plastic wrapping inside the shade. Confused the hell out of me for a while until I found it :( I was instructed to leave the plastic on to keep the shade clean until customer moved in !!

Additionally I wonder if the higher UV content of CFL's and LED's has any relevance, it certainly discolours the plastic quicker.
Not just discolour.

I had a ceiling light like this:

(Not that actual one, but a similar basic design) and the cover was plastic.

CFLs turned it into a brittle, crumbling ruin.

I would advise anybody who wants to use CFLs or LEDs inside a low-profile flush light to find one with metal lampholders and a glass cover.
