Just had the annual Gas check/service done and this comment has been made regarging the gas cooker

The worktops have been there for years and the ends have always been and still are the original strip of formica glued on.

Is it unacceptable now or ever been?

I'm a DIYer, but I can't see what that has to do with gas safety.

EDIT: Yes just a comment.

Put what on?

The ends of the worktops are covered with formica edging strip and very tight to the cooker.

Usually the MI's for the cooker will specify clearances to flammable surfaces, electrical outlets, heights to extractors etc, that's the important part and should be followed. I think there is also mention in the building regs, where it specifies distances of combustible surfaces form heat sources

Absolutely - it allows the edge of the surface to be protected and is no longer then considered a combustible edge. When the replacement was being performed then the MI would have stated what distances they required. What is the make and model of the cooker?

As was suggested though, it's not a gas safe regulation but the report is a bit ambiguous, highlighting it as a defect.

will repeat if there is no sign of any distress do not worry ,formica is not classed as combustible surface otherwise hobs would not be fitted into worktops
Slot in cookers will ask from nothing to only a couple of millimetres side clearance the main thing they ask for regards worktops is that the hotplate is level or above the worktop surface
