Large Combi?

I'm not a boiler expert, but do energy enginering and have been reseaching boilers a lot recently for my Mum's 4/5 bed georgian terrace house (no wall insulation, but we have insulated the roofs a lot and will be putting in draught-proofing etc). The heat loss for space heating is around 30kW. Is your house a lot bigger than this?

The alpha CD50 is a 'storage combi' designed to offer good hot water performance for a larger house with a number of bathrooms. It gives around 30kW ch and 32kW hot water (18l/min) .

Alpha also do a 'flow smart' package, which has very similar performance. It is a combi, but uses additional heat recover and a small store to enable 18l/min hw flow rate. the flow smart also includes features to reduce gas consumption. http://www.alpha-innovation.co.uk/products/?id=7

I'm sure there must be equivalents by other manufacturers, and people seem to have both positive and negative reports on alpha's, but I haven't found anything else that matches it yet. (If anyone else can advise me of anything that performs equivalent to the flowsmart in efficiency, output and price, please let me know - otherwise I am about to buy one!).

(on a side note, if the house is that big and you can't find a combi that does the job, is there enough space for a wood pellet boiler? http://www.froeling.com/en/products/overview/pellet_boiler.html )

Hope this is helpful.

would love to know the dimensions for this house to require 40kw space heating.

I would bet that someone has added up the heat loss for each room and then thought this was the heat requirement for the house.

The only house i've fitted a boiler with high heat loss was a farmhouse with 3 storeys and 8 bedrooms . It had 55 rads in total. That still only needed 38kw

They might be oversizing it to allow for intermittent heating.

What method do you apply?
